Earl Horter — Brooklyn Bridge

The bridge seen from the working waterfront — past the sheds and the masts, with the towers of Manhattan rising beyond the cables.

The document

An etching, undated, drawn in a line so fine it exists only in print. Horter puts the bridge in its working context rather than isolating it: ferry sheds, a tug, a sailing boat, the piled roofs of the docks. The title and his signature are written in pencil below the plate. Reproduced from the impression at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

About the artist

Earl Horter (1881–1940) was a Philadelphia etcher, illustrator and teacher, and an early American collector of Picasso, Braque and Duchamp — a modernist eye applied to a nineteenth-century medium.
