New York on Paper

Manhattan as it was drawn, etched and printed — from the sailing harbour of 1884 to the towers of the nineteen-thirties.

Not the skyline and not a photograph: eight prints made by hand, by artists who walked the city and cut what they saw into copper and stone. A harbour at dusk before the bridges. Broadway looking up. The Brooklyn Bridge from the working docks. A steamer at the pier at Coenties Slip. Every one is a public-domain document, recovered from a museum collection and reproduced faithfully, with its Métrica caption printed as part of the piece.

Within it, Street Level gathers the three Manhattan etchings of Elias M. Grossman.
