About the print
This is a sumizuri-e — an early ukiyo-e woodblock printed in a single sumi-black key line, before colour ever entered the medium. Hishikawa Moronobu carved the line that would define Japanese print for two centuries. And that is exactly why it belongs on a screen-printed tee: a woodblock key-block is a flat black stencil — serigraphy is the same idea, four hundred years later. We print the one sumi line, nothing else.

About the artist
Hishikawa Moronobu (c. 1618–1694) is called the father of ukiyo-e — the first to sign his prints and to lift the "floating world" out of book illustration into art in its own right. His elegant, economical line is the template every later master, from Hokusai to Hiroshige, would build on.
