The document
On 26 April 1779, in Salzburg, Mozart finished a symphony in G major, K. 318. He was twenty-three. He wrote it in brown ink on oblong paper ruled with ten staves — twenty-two leaves, forty-four pages — and that score is kept today at The New York Public Library. This notebook reproduces it complete: every page, in order, at actual size.
Inside the notebook
First, a few pages on the manuscript itself: the story of the symphony; the five people who wrote on its first page — Mozart was only one of them; how to read his notation; and the paper, the ink and the places where he changed his mind.
Then the score, all 44 pages, each opening a verso and the recto that follows it, as they face each other in the manuscript — and the two trumpet parts he kept on separate sheets, with a sum he worked out in a margin.
Then the pages are yours. Choose your paper:
- Staff paper — 51 pages ruled like his: ten staves to a page, each eight millimetres high, the size of Mozart's, measured on the score.
- Lined — 51 lined pages, the lines eight millimetres apart: the height of one of his staves.
Both end with eight pages for notes.
A4, spiral-bound, it lies flat. Mozart wrote on oblong paper, and this notebook has the same shape: it opens the way his score does, a verso on the left and the recto that follows it on the right.

The first page
Mozart wrote the music, the title and his name, followed by mpa — manu propria, “in his own hand.” The date beneath his name, often taken for his, was added by Johann Anton André, the publisher who bought his papers in 1800. Three others added catalogue numbers and notes. The hands are identified in the critical report of the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe.
