About the print
Beardsley drew this for the first English edition of Oscar Wilde's Salomé (1894). He worked only in black ink and white paper — no half-tones, no shading, just the nerve of a line and the drama of a solid black mass (here, the cape). That is already a one-colour print: we lay a single black ink and let the bare fabric be every white detail.

About the artist
Aubrey Beardsley (1872–1898) redefined illustration in a career of barely six years before tuberculosis killed him at 25. His black-and-white line — decadent, precise, made for reproduction — scandalized Victorian England. Nothing has looked quite like it since.
