Joseph Pennell — Broadway Towers

Broadway in 1904, drawn looking up: the towers lean in and the sky is a narrow strip of light between them.

The document

A lithograph from Pennell’s portfolio Lithographs of New York in 1904, printed in 1905. Drawn with a lithographic crayon on stone — the softness is the medium, not the scan. Reproduced from the impression at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, complete with the artist’s monogram at lower centre.

About the artist

Joseph Pennell (1857–1926) was born in Philadelphia and died in New York City. He spent a career drawing the built world — cathedrals, canals, bridges, and the first American skyscrapers.

The print

Printed to order and made to last. Choose Museum Matte (heavyweight matte art paper) or Fine Art Giclée (Hahnemühle cotton paper — the archival standard). The Métrica museum caption — artist, title, date and source — is printed as part of the piece, set in our house type. Free US shipping on two or more pieces.
