About the print

One of the few colour works Beardsley ever made: a colour lithograph of Isolde raising the fatal love-potion, printed in The Studio in 1895. A colour lithograph is built from flat printed planes, so it comes apart cleanly into three screens — the vermilion field, the black line, and the green of the potion itself. The cream shirt is Isolde's white gown.

About the artist

Aubrey Beardsley (1872–1898) worked almost entirely in black and white, which makes this colour piece a genuine deep cut — the same impossible line, now with a scandal of red behind it.
