An etching from 1884, printed with the tone left deliberately on the plate so the light sits in the water. This is the harbour of the sailing age — the Brooklyn Bridge had opened only the year before. Reproduced from the impression at The Cleveland Museum of Art.

About the artist

Henry Farrer (1843–1903) was born in London and worked in Brooklyn. He was a founder of the American Society of Painter-Etchers and one of the artists who made etching an American art rather than a reproductive trade.
