The map that gave the stars their names.

About the print

In 1603 Johann Bayer published Uranometria, the first atlas to chart the whole celestial sphere — and the first to letter the stars in Greek (α Orionis, β Orionis) in the order astronomers still use. About the artist

Johann Bayer (1572–1625), a German lawyer and astronomer, gave us the Bayer designations — the star-naming system still in use four centuries on. Uranometria (1603) paired rigorous positions with figures of real beauty, across 51 plates.
