About the print

The Beggarstaffs designed this for Henry Irving’s Don Quixote at the Lyceum, and Irving turned it down — «No more mills.» The play ran the season and toured America; the poster never reached the street. The design outlived the production by a century. They worked in cut paper, in flat silhouettes and empty space, and in doing so basically invented modern graphic design. About the artist

"The Beggarstaffs" was the shared name of James Pryde and William Nicholson, brothers-in-law who for a few years in the 1890s made the most radical posters in Britain — reductive, flat, decades ahead of their moment. Their line runs straight through to the Bauhaus and modern graphic design.
